NYC Concert Recommendations for Nov 9-15

Julian Lage Group @ Jazz Standard this week

Tuesday
Peter and the Wolf, Spirit Family Reunion @ House Concert – Brooklyn
Folksy-Indie Rock in a great intimate setting. Email me for more info. 9PM $8 Suggested Donation

AfroCubism “The original idea for the Buena Vista Social Club” @ Town Hall
(Afro-Cuban) The original idea for the Buena Vista Social Club, with Cuban singer/guitarist Eliades Ochoa and the Malians Bassekou Kouyate (ngoni) and Djelimady Tounkara (electric guitar) are joined by Eliades’ Grupo Patria, Toumani Diabate (kora), Kasse Mady Diabate (vocals) and Lasana Diabate (balafon). 8PM $35-$65

Tuesday-Wednesday
Julian Lage Group @ Jazz Standard
(Jazz-ish) A unique instrumentation and lack of a high-hat cymbal gives this band an organic world-music sound, which is something illusively hard to achieve. $20 Sets at 7:30 and 9:30

Thursday
The Infamous Stringdusters/Trampled By Turtles @ Bowery Ballroom
(some kind of grass) This is a weird match up – the Stringdusters are clean, flashy, jam driven bluegrass, while Trampled By Turtles is loose, rough, fast, expressive, punk grass. I’m excited about seeing them live.
$15 8PM

Friday
Hanneke Cassel, Mike Block, Christopher Lewis @ House Concert – Manhattan
(Irish) Another great house concert featuring Cassel – an amazing Irish Fiddler along with cello and guitar. Email me for details. 7:30 $15 Suggested Donation

Saturday
Contradance w/ Elixir @ Chinatown Houston St. YMCA – LES
(Trad) Contradancing is something I got into this summer. Its really nerdy but really fun when you’re doing it, and the live bands are usually great. Think like square dancing but in lines, with your partner across from you in an opposite line. There’s a weekly contradance here, but this one is a special event because the band is more well known. 9PM $18

Sunday
Crooked Still @ Joe’s Pub
(Folk) Love their new CD, and the live shows don’t disappoint. Aoife’s voice i sounding better than ever and the band is finally getting used to their expanded instrumentation with Brittany Haas sounding incredible on fiddle. 7:30PM $22

Monday
Charlie Hunter Trio/ Mark Giuliana’s Beat Music @ LPR
(Jazz-Rock) Search and Restore is back! This is a great pairing of bands at an amazing venue! 6PM $15
