NYC Concert Recommendations for May 7-12, 2013

Tuesday, May 7th

Two of the finest bluegrass guitar players in the world play duo on this rare occasion. 10pm Free.

Colin Stetson at Le Poisson Rouge 8pm
“Intensely Imaginative” doesn’t begin to describe the kind of evocative sound that Stetson creates using a bass saxophone, circular breathing, and multiple microphones. An absolute must-see.

Cuddle Magic and Father Figures at Death By Audio 10pm
Two bands on the forefront of progressive pop/experimental music. This show is likely to be packed.

Big Mean Sound Machine at Brooklyn Bowl
Non-stop afrobeat from Ithaca.

Thursday, May 9th
Bennett Sullivan CD Release at Session 73 (Upper East Side)
Four of the best bluegrass pickers in town get together to celebrate the release of Sullivan’s debut solo record. 9pm

Friday, May 10th

This show is way sold out, but two awesome bands who have been gaining traction finally come back home from the road for one night.

Friday-Sunday, May 10th-12th
Bayou ‘n Brooklyn¬†Festival at Jalopy
Megan Brown, widely considered to be the best cajun singer today, joins Ed Poullard and Christine Balfa, along with local backing bands for a full weekend of music, dance, food, and jams. $15 per day.
