NYC Concert Recommendations 6/15-6/21

Carefusion Jazzfestival kicks off this week. I've highlighted a few of my picks as well as some other great music happening this week.

Tuesday
Erik Friedlander’s Broken Arm Trio feat. Doug Wamble @ the Stone (LES)
(Jazz) Erik Friedlander (cello) Doug Wamble (guitar) Trevor Dunn (bass) Mike Sarin (drums) 8PM $10

Thursday
Railroad Earth @ Rocks Off Boat Cruise
(Jam) Bluegrass-Jamband RRE has been crafting fine songs for 10+ years now. Plus, this is on a boat!

Bobby Lee Rodgers Trio opening for the Spin Doctors @ Mexicali Live
(Rock) BLR is a guitar wizard (former Berklee teacher) and writes songs that build up with the intensity of a slow freight train. Doesn’t make it to the Northeast very often.

Mostly Other People Do the Killing AND Seabrook Power Plant @ Zebulon
(Jazz) I first heard Brandon Seabrook playing with the amazing Jeremy Udden’s Plainville. This is his sort of banjo-metal-jazz project that I’m super excited to hear. After that MOPDK will rock the house with their beautifully organic mix of traditional and free jazz with a sense of humor! 9PM Free

Russ Flynn Big Band @ Brooklyn Tea Lounge
(Jazz) The buzz about this new band band has been big, with several musicians from within the band raving about the compositions (which doesn’t happen all that often). Unique instrumentation as well. 9PM Free

Friday
Jazz Gallery All-Stars @ Symphony Space
(Jazz) Roy Hargrove Claudia Acuña, Ambrose Akinmusire, Gerald Clayton, Lage Lune, Pedro Martinez, Kendrick Scott, Ben Williams, Miguel Zenón $15 8PM

Saturday
Mike Stern Trio and Bitches Brew Revisited @ Prospect Park Band Shell
Mike Stern is a genuine guitarist with great songs and a supportive band. Bitches Brew revisited is one of the few tribute projects I actually like, featuring relevant takes on the classic with Marco Benevento and others. 7:30PM Free

Slavic Soul Party @ Barbes
A chance to hear this band on a night that isn’t Tuesday, when they have their usual residency. Plus its right on your way home from Prospect Park. Extremely infectious dance music like the name suggests. 10:00 $15

Sunday
Ryan Scott @ Rockwood Stage 2
(Rock) Quite possibly the most underrated songwriter and guitarist in the history of music. Playing an extremely rare show with a full band including horns!! 11:30PM Free

Monday
Darcy James Argue’s Secret Society @ Dizzy’s
(Jazz) Steampunk Bigband music for your grandchildren’s future generation.

Sarah Watkins feat. Special Guest @ Joe’s Pub
(Folk) Great singer/fiddle player with her brother Sean comprising 2/3s of the former supergroup Nickel Creek. Special guest could very well be the other 1/3. 9:30 $17 + $10 minimum.
